Mt. AsahidakeHokkaido's Highest Peak

At an elevation of 2,290, Mt. Asahidake is Hokkaido’s highest peak and is one of the most popular mountains to visit in the Japanese prefecture. There are a number of ponds around the base filled with water from melted snow, with Sugatami Pond acting as a mirror for the peak. The mountain is considered an active volcano with steam escaping from volcanic vents around the mountain. Mt. Asahidake can be accessed via a ropeway which runs most of the year, and there is an easy walking track at the top. The summit can be accessed via a marked hiking trail, with access to further trails that lead across the mountain range. The following images were taken in autumn when the leaves had just started to change colour.
